Stella Maris Academy and the entire Diocese has implemented a system of computerized adaptive testing through the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). This is called the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). NWEA MAP test scores are reported in “RIT” (Rausch Unit) form. It is an equal interval scale, which provides a very useful look at student achievement and growth over time. The RIT score represents each student's current instructional level (e.g. readiness to learn). As students take their computerized MAP tests, the questions become more or less difficult as students answer the test’s questions. The difficulty of each question is assigned a RIT level and students’ RIT scores are established with the consistent frequency of their correct responses. The final score is an estimate of the student’s achievement level.
School staff uses MAP results to measure effectiveness in the classroom and to assist in continuous improvement of curricula. Results also help teachers in meeting the educational needs of individual students and groups of students within our school communities. Scores allow us to compare academic performance against national standardized test results. They are one of many assessment tools we use to track student progress, pinpoint where more teaching assistance is required, and ensure that each individual student receives the personalized attention they need to succeed.
Test results are recorded as percentiles that measure the performance of our students in relation to national student groups. This enables staff to identify the strengths of our educational programs and areas where more emphasis is needed. Generally speaking, our students perform in the top quartile of the national norms and 1.5 to 2.0 grade equivalents above their current grade placement. Having this knowledge is valuable for achieving accreditation and accountability. Ongoing measures of progress also take place in each classroom based on the curriculum and adjustments are made to teaching.
