Jodi has been teaching at the Holy Rosary campus for 21 years. Jodi’s favorite saint is St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. “She is a role model who captivated everyone by her kindness, patience, good sense, wit, and courtesy. She learned to accept God's will after enduring many losses and I look to her as a role model when I go through times of struggle myself.”
Anna Marie Bergeland
Julianne is the Principal of the St. James Campus. She has been working in Catholic Schools within the Diocese of Duluth for 21 years. “I love being able to work in an environment that is centered on teaching the "whole" child. Everyone that works in our school is here for the right reason. Every staff member puts 110% into everything they do for the students and families. I love being part of the SMA Mission - to Lead, Love and Serve as Jesus taught - transforming our world one student at a time.”
Jenny is the Director of Faith Formation at SMA and is involved with helping organize faith formation experiences for students, teachers and families. “I enjoy that my position at SMA allows me to combine my love of the Catholic faith, community-building and merriment. I am passionate about teaching and sharing the Good News with this community!” Jenny has many favorite saints, but especially loves the wisdom of St. Padre Pio who commanded the faithful to "serve the Lord with laughter" and to "pray, hope and don't worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayers."
Kristin teaches Global Friendships and Technology with Stella Maris Academy. Her favorite quote is “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:12-13
Tina is the St. James Campus Administrative Assistant. One of her favorites saints is St. Elizabeth Anne Seton. She is the first native-born citizen of the United States to be canonized by the Catholic Church. She is said to have lived a quiet, simple and often lonely life. The Bible was what she used for instruction, support and comfort.
Gabrielle is one of SMA’s Pre-Kindergarten teachers. She graduated from State University of New York at Fredonia (SUNY Fredonia) in Early Childhood Education. This is Gabrielle’s first year at Stella Maris Academy, but even at age 5 Gabrielle knew she wanted to be a teacher.
Ann is the Food Service Manager at the Holy Rosary campus. “Having worked in many different schools traveling around the country, this is ultimately the best education system I have seen. The children and the staff are phenomenal. They truly make it a joy to come to work everyday.”
Eric wears many hats at SMA as band teacher, religion teacher and activities director. He has taught in Catholic education for 7 years, in both Belize and Duluth. His favorite saint is St. Faustina Kowalska - which is why he named his daughter after her!
Marea teaches 8th Grade Algebra 2 and is a Pre-Kindergarten aide for Stella Maris Academy. Marea enjoys watching movies with friends in her free time. Her favorite saint is Saint Faustina Kowalska.
Kathleen has a BA in Piano Performance and Studio Teaching, K-8 General and Vocal Music. She teaches piano at Stella Maris Academy and has been teaching here for two years. When she isn’t busy with teaching she enjoys spending time with her family, skiing, rowing, and reading.
Sr. Mary Elizabeth, ACJ
Sr. Mary Elizabeth has a B.A. degree in English from University of Minnesota Twin Cities. She teaches Religion and Latin at Stella Maris Academy. Her favorite quote is "As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love." John 15:9. Sr. Mary Elizabeth enjoys reading and going for walks when she isn’t busy with teaching.
Cheryl served as a volunteer parent for 20 years before joining SMA as a Tues./Thurs. Kindergarten teacher this year. When she isn’t teaching, she enjoys cheering on her 8 children at sporting events and other activities.
Lisa is the piano and band instrument instructor for Holy Rosary campus. She has been at the Holy Rosary campus for 14 years. “I love teaching in a place with the children's school teachers--this is a rarity for private music instructors--because it allows me to find out more about a child's learning style and then use that knowledge in my teaching. It allows a much more individualized experience for each child.” Lisa’s favorite quote is Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.“
Peggy has been a Catholic educator for nearly 25 years. “There is no better place to work. It is amazing to see how much the children grow not only in their studies but also in their faith. It is great to share my belief with the kids and know that through prayer all things are possible.”
James has been teaching for 7 years, and currently teaches 5th grade math, science, and word study. His favorite quote from the bible is Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” -Matthew 19:14. He believes “We must approach with the faith of a child. Trusting and open.”
Sam has been teaching music and serving as the Middle School Choir Director for over 3 years. “Connecting a child's faith and interdisciplinary learning into their music education can and is the difference in our students and their families!”
Sue has been devoted to children’s health in schools for 11 years. She loves the “feels like family” atmosphere at Stella Maris and enjoys watching the students benefit from value-based learning.
Angela has a degree in Elementary Education and Catholic Studies from the College of St. Scholastica. She appreciates incorporating her faith into the classroom. “I truly believe that Catholic education teaches the whole child: mind, body, and spirit.” Outside of school, her all-time favorite thing to do is water ski.
Hilaire is a member and Trustee of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary. She has a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Community Health Education and Psychology and a Master of Education degree from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. In her free time she loves to spend time with her family and friends, enjoys hikes with her dog and cooking with her daughters as though they were on the Food Network. Time with the Lord at church and in prayer is her anchor. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. On your own intelligence do not rely. In all your ways be mindful of Him and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
Grandma Shelly Johnson
Katelyn focuses on all channels of communication at SMA - social media, newsletters, event coordination and more. When Katelyn isn’t posting the cutest and newest photos of our students, she enjoys traveling and hanging out with her kitten.
Teresa is Stella Maris Academy’s Development Associate.
Leah’s favorite part of teaching at SMA is not having to separate her faith and work. “I have the opportunity to teach the faith and grow in my own all day, every day.” She’s been a Catholic educator for 10 years.
Theresa has spent most of her life involved with Catholic education in one form or another. She is a proud alum of Holy Rosary, and has worked with the SMA family for 5 years, currently as an Administrative Assistant. Even though she wanted to be a kindergarten teacher when she was 5, SMA is blessed to have her share her talents with all of the SMA children and families.
This is Kristin’s 15th year in Catholic education at our campuses. She teaches both English and American History. Kristin loves a quote from Corrie ten Boom: "Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God."
Linda has worked in Catholic education for 11 years and is our current Pre-Kindergarten Aide. Linda loves working at SMA because “no other place can you find faith education and I absolutely love working with children.” In her spare time she enjoys gardening, camping, and sewing.
Adam teaches 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science. When Adam isn’t busy teaching he enjoys hiking, biking, climbing, and agate hunting. It is hard to believe after seeing Adam’s passion for science that when he was 5 he wanted to be a train engineer.
Lisa is one of Stella Maris Academy’s valued Administrative Assistants. She loves to go for long walks and hikes in the Duluth area. One of Lisa’s favorite verses is "I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love" -Ephesians 4:1-2.
Mike has been Stella Maris Academy’s Business Manager for over a year. He enjoys movies and sharing the classics with his kids. Mike’s favorite saint is St. Michael the Archangel, of course. “How can I not love that he is the leader of God's army defending us against evil?”
Jennifer has taught in Catholic schools for 15 years. When she isn’t teaching, you can find her camping, gardening, and spending time with her two grandchildren.
Susan has her Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, BA in Elementary Education and Masters in Curriculum Instruction/Design and Biblical Literacy. Unsurprisingly, she has known that she wanted to teach since age 5!
Stephanie started teaching at St. James during the 2002-2003 school year. She taught middle school for 6 school years and then moved to 2nd grade where she has been ever since. She loves preparing the students for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
We have been blessed to have Sonya teaching at SMA for a year and half. She attended Holy Rosary and now her children are the 4th generation in her family to attend. “The love for this school runs very deep in my family.”
Jesse has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biological Research from St. Mary's University and a Master of Arts in Instruction from St. Mary's University. Jesse is the Principal at the St. John’s campus. When he isn’t busy with school he enjoys running and hiking the trails of Duluth.
Sarah is our superstar math teacher. She firmly believes that “the development of a person comes first, and education comes second” which is why she loves teaching at Stella Maris Academy.
Elizabeth graduated with a History degree from Christendom College. She teaches 6th grade Latin at Stella Maris Academy. Elizabeth loves cooking, baking, going on walks in the awesome Duluth parks, and reading. Her favorite quote is 1 Corinthians 13: 1-3: “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
Jodi teaches third grade and has been teaching for over 22 years. One of her favorite quotes is “The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” -Dr. Seuss. In Jodi’s spare time, she loves spending time with her family and watching her two boys play sports.
Dawn attended the University of Wisconsin and earned 2 degrees in elementary education and psychology. She is passionate about her job and adores teaching 1st grade! Dawn loves to cook and bake and recently flower arranging has become something she loves to do. Her faith has been her guiding light and salvation and everything she does, she does for the Lord.
Katlyn is a Pre-K Aide for Stella Maris Academy. Since she was 5 Katlyn had always wanted to be a teacher. When she is not busy teaching she enjoys Ballroom Dancing. Her favorite quote is "Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." Philippians 4:7
Sarah’s commitment to students and families is evident in her work to make SMA the best place it can be for each family. She reads the Prayer of St. Francis every single day. “It captures the way I strive to live my life and serves as a wonderful reminder on how to treat others.”
Lynn has been apart of Catholic Education for 26 years. “I love to learn and to help kids know that learning is a gift and a life-long process is a joy. Working in the Catholic schools with supportive families and eager, helpful and kind students is so energizing. The pinnacle of all of this is when we join together at mass, and we know the bond of being together in prayer and celebration of the Eucharist.”
Sr. Agnes Pia, ACJ
Lindsey is a 4th grade teacher at Stella Maris Academy. When she is not at school, you find her with her camera in search of beautiful landscapes, seascapes, and nightscapes. Lindsey also loves to travel the world for photography.
LeeAnne has been teaching for over 29 years. At SMA, she appreciates “the family feel of our school, smaller class sizes and the ability to share our faith. We are committed to educating the whole child and making faith the focus.”
Sue an Administrative Assistant at the St. John’s Campus. When she isn’t helping our teachers and students, Sue enjoys hiking, cross country skiing, playing in the dirt, and spending time with her family. Sue’s favorite quote is from Mother Theresa “ If you want to change the world go home and love your family.”
This is Naomi’s first year with Stella Maris Academy teaching physical education to every student in the school, Pre-K through 8th grade. When Naomi isn’t at school, she enjoys playing cribbage and hiking beautiful trails.
Dan teaches middle school English and Science at Stella Maris Academy. His favorite bible verse is “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
Becky has been a part of Catholic education for over 11 years. “I love the way we all feel like family. I know most of the kids in the hall and can call them by name as I say hi to them. I feel so loved by the other faculty, as we are a great team and help each other whenever needed.”
Kelly graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a double major in Elementary Education and Psychology and minor in Catholic Studies. While at the University of St. Thomas, she spent a semester in Rome; traveling is still her favorite thing to do outside of the classroom.
Suzy started her career at Holy Rosary in 1984 under the guidance of the Dominican Sisters. Their influence inspired Suzy to remain in Catholic education for all of these years. Her favorite Saint is Saint Mother Theresa of Calcutta. Her hobbies include downhill skiing in the winter and sailing on Rainy Lake in the summer.
Sean graduated from University of Minnesota Duluth in Secondary Social Studies. He has taught at St. James since 2008. When he isn’t busy in the classroom, he enjoys traveling, camping, backpacking, cooking, music, and sports.
Kelly stays very involved at SMA as the 6th grade Homeroom, Math and Religion teacher, as well as the 7th grade Pre-Algebra teacher. She has wanted to teach since she was a little girl. “I would bring home worksheets in elementary school and teach my class of stuffed animals in my room.”
Carole did her student teaching under Suzy Wagness in 1994 at Holy Rosary. She then became a long-term substitute in January 1995 in 2nd grade and has continued here ever since. We have been blessed to have her teach 2nd, 5th, and 3rd grade over the years.
David is our very busy and talented Art, STEM, PE teacher and basketball coach. When he isn’t immersed in SMA activities, he enjoys painting and drawing, canoeing in the Boundary Waters and riding his Olive Gold 883 Iron Harley-Davidson Sportster.
Bridget graduated from the University of St. Thomas - Bachelor of Arts in Education and Spanish. She is the middle school Spanish, 7th grade Homeroom, and also serves as the Learning Specialist. “There are so many wonderful parts of working at SMA, but the greatest is the students. There's nothing better than building relationships with students and working closely to help them succeed. We have such a wonderful community of students, parents and incredible staff here at Stella Maris - it definitely makes coming to work a joy. I feel very blessed to teach in such a great community.”
