Every Student Succeeds

We support parents as the primary educators of their children and collaborate with them to form young people who are equipped to live moral, upright, and successful lives. This partnership supports the school’s educational efforts for each student through the family’s involvement, serving as role models and active participants in our school. We are proud of our highly engaged and effective teachers, the family involvement and the sense of community at Stella Maris Academy- all factors important for student success.

  • Historically, our students perform in the top 85th percentile and higher of national norms and 1.5 to 2.0 grade equivalents above their current grade placement.

  • A variety of instructional practices allow teachers to accommodate multiple learning styles, needs and levels. These include differentiated instruction, performance-based learning, service learning, cooperative learning, interdisciplinary instruction and accelerated learning.

  • Our written curricular and instructional practices are guided by current research and best professional practices.

“Stella Maris is one of the titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary. "Star of the Sea" has a special significance to all Duluthians. The title has been part of our Catholic history since the 9th century and the patroness of St. Mary, Star of the Sea downtown, Duluth, almost since our beginning as a diocese. The title emphasizes Mary's role as a sign of hope and a guiding star for Christians. The Blessed Virgin Mary will lead our young people, and all of us to Jesus.”

+ Bishop Paul Sirba

Stella Maris Academy Prayer

Oh Mary, our Mother, whom all souls call Stella Maris, GUIDE US TO THE HEART OF YOUR SON JESUS CHRIST.

Teach us, you who are the Star of the Sea, TO LEAD, TO LOVE AND TO SERVE LIKE HIM.

Stella Maris, our protector and guide, pray for us, that we may live in accordance with the will of God. Be our teacher from heaven, to know His great mercy, to live fully in His love, to celebrate faithfully His traditions, and to walk steadfast in His truth.

Oh sweet Stella Maris, UNITE OUR SOULS TO JESUS.

A Glimpse at the History of Catholic Schools in Duluth

For nearly 140 years, the clergy, religious sisters, lay teachers and parents of the area began and maintained the Catholic schools in Duluth. They have been challenged by travel, language, illness, severe winters, fires, and recessions. They have continuously built, rebuilt and reconfigured schools to form children in the fullness of the faith. From the first Catholic school founded in 1881, to the dozens that followed, to the present day Catholic school of Stella Maris Academy with its three campuses, Catholic education has remained an essential institution in Duluth. Here's a glimpse at that dynamic history, courtesy of the Diocese of Duluth archives:
