This week, from January 26 through February 1, Stella Maris Academy is celebrating National Catholic Schools Week. All three campuses across the city of Duluth – St. James, St. John’s and Holy Rosary – will be buzzing with activities every day of the week, as well as service projects, prayer, and fun to celebrate and recognize Catholic school education.

Finding Faith in Catholic Schools

When we moved to Duluth in 2015, our new Catholic school community at Stella Maris Academy welcomed us with open arms. My daughter fit right into her third grade classroom as though she had been with them since preschool. At our first conference, Belle’s teacher asked us to describe our favorite attribute of our daughter. When I responded “Joy, pure joy,” she wholeheartedly agreed. I was so moved that she not only saw Belle as a student, but genuinely felt Belle’s joy, too. It was clear her teacher and the students were living their faith and accepted Belle as one of their own.

“What is going on in those little heads?”: The Middle School Mind

Recently while stopping by to grab a drink at my favorite coffee shop, the barista behind the counter gestured to a gaggle of bubbly 13-year-olds and pointedly asked, “What is going on in those little heads?” I laughed and said, “Well, the answer is… A LOT.” I then offered an impromptu run-down of all the cognitive, physical, hormonal, and emotional development bombarding those “little heads.”

When a Strong Community Becomes a Second Family

With tears streaming down his cheeks, my fourth grade son, Peter, stood slumped before me and fiercely whispered, “But Mom, you don’t understand. This place really is like a second home to me!” It was the last day of school, and my fourth grader was struggling to say goodbye to the Holy Rosary campus of Stella Maris Academy.
